Mahavitaran has dismissed viral claims that its smart electricity meters contain hidden cameras, saying the devices are designed only for electricity measurement and remote communication. Police have registered a criminal case against two individuals accused of spreading the misinformation.

Mahavitaran has clarified that its smart electricity meters do not contain cameras or any mechanism to record consumers’ private activities, after misleading claims circulated widely on social media triggered concern among electricity users.

The clarification comes after a criminal case was registered at Sawantwadi Police Station against a YouTube channel editor and an office-bearer of a consumer organisation for allegedly spreading false information that smart meters installed by Mahavitaran contain hidden cameras capable of monitoring citizens inside their homes. According to police, the alleged misinformation created unnecessary fear and confusion among the public.

Investigators said the controversy began after a discussion on smart meters was conducted on a YouTube channel in Sindhudurg district. During the discussion, Mahavitaran officials explained the functioning and benefits of smart meters. However, authorities allege that a short social media clip was later circulated without the full context, falsely claiming that the meters contained surveillance cameras.

Mahavitaran has maintained that smart meters are advanced electricity meters, not surveillance devices. The utility appealed to consumers not to believe unverified social media posts and to rely only on official information regarding the technology.

What Does a Smart Meter Actually Do?

Smart meters are digital electricity meters that automatically record electricity consumption and securely transmit billing data to the electricity distribution company through built-in communication modules such as cellular or other approved communication technologies. They are designed to eliminate manual meter readings, improve billing accuracy and help utilities detect outages or power theft more efficiently. MSEDCL’s technical specifications describe communication modules for transmitting meter data and remote meter management, but they do not include any provision for cameras, microphones or video recording equipment.

Unlike conventional meters, smart meters can:

  • Automatically send meter readings to the utility.
  • Support remote connection and disconnection where permitted.
  • Detect tampering and record power interruptions.
  • Provide near real-time consumption data.
  • Help reduce estimated or manual billing errors.
  • Enable quicker fault detection and restoration of electricity supply.

Experts note that smart meters measure electrical parameters such as voltage, current, power consumption and energy usage. They do not capture photographs, videos or audio from consumers’ premises. The communication module transfers only meter-related operational data required for billing and grid management.

Police said the case has been registered under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to creating public fear, criminal intimidation, intentional insult and defamation. The investigation is continuing to determine the extent of the alleged circulation of misleading content.

Cyber experts have repeatedly advised citizens to verify claims through official government departments or electricity utilities before sharing them online, particularly when the information concerns public infrastructure or essential services.

Key takeaway:

Mahavitaran has categorically stated that its smart meters do not contain hidden cameras. The devices are designed for automated electricity metering and secure data communication, while police are investigating the alleged spread of false claims on social media.

Disclaimer: Consumers are advised to verify information related to electricity services through official Mahavitaran channels before acting on or sharing social media posts.
