Pune, May 18, 2026: A controversy has erupted in Pune after NCP leader and corporator Suhas Tingre accused a private hospital of negligence, insensitive treatment of a bereaved family, and excessive medical billing following the death of a 31-year-old man.

In a social media post, Tingre alleged that Jehangir Hospital charged ₹3.25 lakh for nearly 13 hours of treatment provided to Nilesh Chandrabhai Chattar, a resident of Munjaba Vasti in Dhanori, Pune, despite no major surgery being conducted.

According to Tingre, Chattar had lost his father just a month ago and was the sole earning member of the family. His sudden death has reportedly left the family devastated.

The corporator further claimed that the hospital collected a deposit of ₹2.5 lakh even though the patient was covered under an insurance policy. He also alleged that the hospital delayed handing over the deceased’s body, stating that it would only be released after insurance approval was received.

Tingre described the incident as “deeply insensitive” and accused the hospital administration of placing financial recovery above humanitarian concerns during a time of grief. He claimed that the family had to wait until morning to receive the body, causing further emotional distress.

Criticising what he termed as unethical practices in reputed private hospitals in Pune, Tingre said such incidents amount to exploitation of grieving families. He demanded a detailed inquiry into the matter and strict action against those found responsible.

The NCP leader also indicated that he would pursue legal action to ensure accountability and to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
