Government 'PM-WANI Scheme': Affordable Internet Access Available Across India, Know How To Apply
The Government of India’s PM-WANI scheme aims to provide affordable and easy internet access through public WiFi hotspots across the country, especially in areas with weak mobile connectivity.
The Central Government has been expanding the PM-WANI (Wi-Fi Access Network Interface) scheme to improve affordable internet access across India. Approved in December 2020, the scheme focuses on providing low-cost public WiFi connectivity in cities, towns and rural areas where mobile data services are weak or expensive.
Under the initiative, citizens can connect to nearby public WiFi hotspots using mobile apps without needing complicated installation processes.

The scheme is part of the government’s broader Digital India mission and is expected to improve internet accessibility for students, office workers, small businesses and daily users.
According to the government, expansion of public WiFi networks can also generate employment opportunities and support small businesses by encouraging local internet service providers and hotspot operators.
How PM-WANI Works
Users can access nearby PM-WANI hotspots through supported mobile applications such as:
- Nanovise Let’s Connect
- PMWANI Data
- Wi-DOT
- Ambe PM WANI
After downloading the app, users need to register using their mobile number and OTP verification. Once location services are enabled, the app displays nearby PM-WANI hotspots.
Users can then choose either a free or paid internet plan and connect directly to the WiFi network.
How To Install PM-WANI WiFi At Home Or Office
People who want to install PM-WANI hotspots at their homes, shops or offices can apply to become a Public Data Officer (PDO).
A PDO is an authorised person or organisation allowed to operate a PM-WANI hotspot under the government framework.
To apply, users need to:
- Visit the Saral Sanchar portal
- Register as a PDO
- Upload required documents
- Submit the application for approval
Once approved, the hotspot can be installed at the location.
The government says the initiative is designed to improve internet access in areas where high-speed mobile connectivity is still limited, while also making public internet services more affordable and widely available across the country.
