Pune, May 20, 2026: The Pune division has recorded the lowest dam water storage level in Maharashtra at just 25.26 percent, raising concerns over water availability ahead of the monsoon season.

According to the Maharashtra Water Resources Department, overall water reserves across more than 3,000 dams in the state currently stand at 33.95 percent. However, reservoir levels in the Pune division are significantly lower than the state average.

Officials noted that during the same period last year, the Pune division had water storage of 22.29 percent. Despite a slight improvement this year, authorities remain concerned due to rising temperatures and increasing demand for water.

The department has appealed to citizens and farmers to use water carefully as reservoir levels continue to decline because of intense summer heat and higher consumption for drinking and irrigation purposes.

Officials said continuous high temperatures since March have led to substantial evaporation losses in dams across the region. At the same time, demand for water in urban and rural areas has increased sharply, putting additional pressure on existing reserves.

The Pune division includes several key dams supplying water to Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad and nearby rural areas. Authorities fear the situation may worsen if monsoon rainfall remains weak in the coming weeks.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also predicted below-normal rainfall this year due to the El Niño effect, increasing concerns about prolonged water management challenges during the monsoon season.

Across Maharashtra, the Amravati division currently has the highest water stock at 44.39 percent, followed by Nagpur at 42.66 percent. The Konkan division has 37.76 percent storage, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division 38.38 percent, and Nashik division 34.60 percent.

The Water Resources Department has urged residents to avoid water wastage and use available reserves responsibly until reservoirs receive adequate inflow from monsoon rains.
