Built at an elevation of nearly 3,556 feet, Visapur Fort stands on the same plateau as its famous twin fort, Lohagad Fort. Historians say the fort was built between 1713 and 1720 by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire, to protect important trade routes and strengthen nearby Lohagad Fort.

One of the biggest attractions during the rainy season is the fort’s unique “staircase waterfall”, where water cascades dramatically over rocky steps, creating breathtaking views for trekkers and photographers. Thousands of adventure enthusiasts visit the fort every monsoon to experience the mist-covered trails, waterfalls and panoramic valley views.

The fort is also famous for its massive fortifications, ancient caves, rock-cut water tanks and old stone structures. Visitors trekking through the route can spot a huge carved statue of Lord Hanuman, locally known as Chapetdan Maruti, along with small caves and drinking water points on the path.

Trekkers can reach the fort through Malavli Railway Station, located around 5 to 9 kilometres away depending on the trekking route. From there, visitors usually travel via Bhaje village before beginning the uphill trek towards the fort.

The area surrounding Visapur Fort also offers access to several popular tourist attractions including Bhaja CavesPawna LakeKune Falls and Ekvira Temple.

Adventure groups and local guides, however, have advised trekkers to remain cautious during the monsoon season. Visitors have been warned not to walk directly through waterfall routes near Patan village, as the strong water flow can become dangerous during heavy rain and may lead to injuries or slips.

With green valleys, cloudy skies, waterfalls and centuries-old fort walls, Visapur Fort continues to remain one of Maharashtra’s most scenic and adventurous monsoon getaway destinations for weekend travellers.
