Viral Video of Water Leakage Inside Pune Metro Coach Sparks Debate; Authorities Issue Clarification
Water Leaks Inside Pune Metro Coach After Heavy Rain, Video Goes Viral
Pune, May 23: Panic and concern spread among Pune Metro commuters after water began leaking inside a moving metro coach during heavy pre-monsoon showers on Friday evening. Videos of the incident quickly went viral on social media, triggering debate over the quality and maintenance of the city’s metro infrastructure.
The incident reportedly occurred on the Pimpri–Swargate Purple Line during peak evening hours, when passengers noticed water dripping from the roof of a crowded metro coach. Within minutes, the leakage intensified, causing water accumulation inside the compartment and leaving commuters uncomfortable.
Several passengers recorded videos showing water entering the coach while people stood packed inside the train. The clips rapidly spread online, with many citizens questioning how a modern and expensive public transport system could face such issues during the season’s first major rainfall spell.
According to reports, Pune witnessed heavy pre-monsoon showers on Friday evening, leading to waterlogging and traffic disruptions in several parts of the city. The leakage incident inside the metro coach further raised concerns regarding passenger safety, maintenance standards, and the structural reliability of the metro system.
However, Pune Metro authorities later clarified that the water was not rainwater leakage from the train structure. Officials stated that the incident was caused by condensation overflow due to a technical issue in the air-conditioning system.
A senior Maha Metro official said the incident took place on May 21, 2026, at around 6:40 pm in Train Set-5 stationed at Ramwadi Metro Station on Metro Line 2. The administration described it as a minor technical fault and appealed to citizens not to believe rumours or misinformation circulating on social media.
Despite the clarification, many commuters and citizens have demanded a detailed inspection of metro coaches and infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future. Social media users also called for greater accountability and stricter quality checks in ongoing urban infrastructure projects.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that Pune recorded 13.1 mm rainfall on Friday, providing temporary relief from the intense summer heat. However, temperatures in several parts of Maharashtra continued to remain above 40 degrees Celsius.
