Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans are set for a title clash in Ahmedabad, but rain remains a talking point. Here is what the IPL rulebook says if the final is interrupted or abandoned.
The stage is set for the IPL 2026 final as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) take on Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 31. While weather forecasts suggest only a limited possibility of rain, fans are eager to know what would happen if the championship clash is washed out.
Unlike the other playoff matches, the IPL final comes with a reserve day, ensuring every effort is made to produce a result and crown a champion on the field.
If rain or other adverse weather conditions interrupt play on Sunday and the match cannot be completed, the final will move to the reserve day on Monday, June 1.
In such a situation, the match resumes from the exact point where it was stopped. The score, wickets and overs already completed remain unchanged, allowing the contest to continue fairly.
A minimum number of overs must be played for a result to be declared. Tournament officials can also reduce the match length if weather delays occur.
If persistent rain or poor conditions prevent any result from being achieved on both the scheduled day and the reserve day, the IPL playing conditions provide a clear solution.
The trophy will be awarded to the team that finished higher in the league-stage points table.
That means Royal Challengers Bengaluru would be declared IPL 2026 champions, as they finished above Gujarat Titans during the league phase.
RCB secured a direct place in the final after defeating GT in Qualifier 1, while Gujarat Titans bounced back by winning Qualifier 2 to book their spot in the title clash.
The final carries additional significance for Bengaluru. Having won their maiden IPL title in 2025 under captain Rajat Patidar, RCB are now aiming to become only the third franchise in IPL history to win back-to-back championships.
So far, only Chennai Super Kings (2010 and 2011) and Mumbai Indians (2019 and 2020) have successfully defended their IPL crowns.
For Gujarat Titans, the match offers a chance to add another title to their impressive record after emerging as one of the most consistent teams of the modern IPL era.
With a reserve day in place and weather forecasts largely favourable, fans will be hoping the final is decided on the field. However, if rain has the final say on both days, the rules clearly favour Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who would lift the IPL 2026 trophy by virtue of their higher league-stage finish.
