BCCI Quashes Rohit Sharma Retirement Rumours, Says Lord's ODI Will Not Be His Final Match
Board secretary Devajit Saikia dismisses speculation, confirms Rohit remains part of India’s ODI plans despite recent reports.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has firmly dismissed reports claiming that Rohit Sharma is set to retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs) after India’s series-deciding match against England at Lord’s, calling the speculation “completely incorrect.”
The clarification came after widespread reports suggested the Indian captain had been informed by selectors that the Lord’s ODI on July 19 would be his final appearance in the format, triggering intense debate among fans and former cricketers.

However, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia categorically denied the claims, stating that Rohit continues to remain an integral part of India’s ODI plans.
“Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and as long as he is part of the team’s strategy, he will continue to play for the country. The ODI match at Lord’s will not be his last,” Saikia said.
The statement effectively puts to rest speculation that the 38-year-old opener is on the verge of ending his ODI career.
Rumours Sparked By Selection Speculation
The retirement rumours gathered pace after reports claimed that India’s selectors and team management were planning a transition ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, with young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal being viewed as a long-term successor.
Some reports even suggested that discussions had taken place between chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and Rohit Sharma regarding his future.
There were also claims that Rohit had been informed he was unlikely to feature in India’s plans for the next World Cup, prompting speculation that he could announce his retirement after the England series.
BCCI Rejects Retirement Narrative
The Board’s official clarification has contradicted those reports.
According to Saikia, no decision has been taken regarding Rohit’s ODI future, and the experienced batter remains part of India’s strategy.
Reports also suggest the BCCI was unhappy over confidential discussions regarding team planning being leaked into the public domain. Board officials are believed to have instructed members of the selection committee to refrain from commenting publicly on the matter.
Rohit Still Aims For 2027 World Cup
Despite the speculation, several reports indicate that Rohit himself has no immediate plans to retire from ODI cricket.
The Indian captain is understood to be keen on continuing until the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup, provided his fitness and form remain satisfactory.
The latest clarification from the BCCI appears to support that possibility, signalling that no retirement timeline has been finalised.
Recent Form Under Scanner
The speculation over Rohit’s future coincided with a relatively modest run of form in ODIs.
Across his last eight ODI innings, the Indian skipper has scored 241 runs at an average of around 30, with one half-century. While his performances have drawn scrutiny, selectors have not indicated that his place in the squad is under immediate threat.
Focus Returns To Cricket
With the BCCI issuing an official clarification, attention is expected to shift back to India’s ongoing ODI series against England.
For now, the Board has made its position clear, Rohit Sharma remains part of India’s ODI plans, and the Lord’s match is not being treated as his farewell appearance.
