Karad, June 5, 2026: In a major relief for lakhs of motorists travelling on the Pune-Kolhapur and Sangli routes, the long-awaited Karad flyover is likely to be opened for traffic by June 20. The project, which has been under discussion for the past two years, is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve travel on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway.

Karad serves as a key transit point in western Maharashtra for vehicles travelling from Mumbai and Pune towards Sangli, Kolhapur, Goa, and Bengaluru. The Kolhapur Naka junction in Karad had emerged as one of the biggest traffic bottlenecks on the highway, with thousands of vehicles often facing long delays, especially during weekends and holiday periods.

Once operational, the flyover will separate local city traffic from long-distance highway traffic, enabling smoother and faster movement of vehicles. Highway-bound vehicles will travel directly over the flyover, while local traffic will continue to use the roads below, reducing congestion and saving considerable travel time.

The flyover has been constructed as part of the six-laning project of the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway. Stretching from Pankaj Hotel to Nandalapur, the structure measures 3.47 kilometres in length and 29.5 metres in width, making it the largest flyover in the Satara-Kagal highway project. Built on 115 pillars, the flyover is being regarded as a significant engineering achievement.

Final-stage works, including asphalt laying, road marking, installation of safety barriers, directional signboards, street lighting, and other safety-related infrastructure, are currently underway. Authorities are working on a war footing to complete all remaining work before June 20.

The project had faced multiple delays due to technical challenges, weather conditions, and other factors, resulting in three deadline extensions. This had led to frustration among motorists. However, with the project nearing completion, commuters and transporters are expected to benefit significantly from improved traffic flow on the busy highway corridor.

Officials are aiming to make the flyover operational before the onset of the monsoon, which is expected to help maintain smooth traffic movement even during periods of heavy rainfall.
