Mumbai, June 6, 2026: A controversy has erupted in Mumbai’s Vidyavihar area after a white painted strip allegedly created for the visit of Jain monks and nuns in a residential society drew objections from a resident and social media influencer. The issue gained widespread attention after a video posted online went viral, prompting police authorities to look into the matter.
The dispute centres around the Kailas Avenue housing society in Vidyavihar. According to influencer Prasad Vedpathak, a white strip was painted using oil paint from the society’s entrance road up to his residence without prior notice or consent from residents. He claimed the marking was intended to facilitate the movement of Jain religious leaders visiting the society.
In a video shared on social media, Vedpathak questioned the rationale behind the decision and expressed concern over the use of a permanent oil-painted marking in a common area. He stated that residents were not consulted before the work was carried out and raised broader questions about the use of shared spaces within housing societies.
While clarifying that he respects all religions, Vedpathak argued that public or common areas should not be altered without discussion and approval from residents. He also questioned whether similar requests from followers of other faiths would be treated in the same manner, sparking a wider debate online about religious accommodation and community spaces.
As the video gained traction on social media, the issue reportedly reached law enforcement authorities. Following complaints regarding the painting of a common area without approval and objections raised by residents, officials from the Ghatkopar Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) visited the society to assess the situation.
Police officials have begun an inquiry into the matter and are examining the circumstances under which the markings were painted. Further action, if any, will depend on the findings of the investigation.
The incident has triggered mixed reactions online, with some supporting the influencer’s demand for transparency and resident consent, while others have defended the society’s decision as a gesture of respect toward religious traditions.
