Domestic LPG Cylinder Price Hiked By Rs 29 Across India; Rs 941.50 in Mumbai
The increase marks the second hike in domestic LPG prices in three months, with oil companies citing rising global energy costs and mounting losses on household gas sales.
Domestic cooking gas consumers across India will now have to pay more for LPG cylinders, as the price of a 14.2-kg domestic cylinder has been increased by Rs 29 with effect from June 7. The latest revision takes the price of a domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi from Rs 913 to Rs 942.
The hike comes nearly three months after a Rs 60 increase announced in March. According to industry sources, rising global energy prices and continued losses on domestic LPG sales have prompted state-owned oil marketing companies to revise rates once again.
The latest increase raises the price of a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder in Delhi to Rs 942, up from Rs 913. Similar increases have been implemented in other major cities across the country.
Revised domestic LPG cylinder prices are now Rs 968 in Kolkata, Rs 941.50 in Mumbai and Rs 957.50 in Chennai. The increase of Rs 29 per cylinder has been applied uniformly across major markets.
Oil marketing companies have said that domestic LPG has been sold below cost for a prolonged period. Industry estimates suggest that companies were losing around Rs 703 on every domestic LPG cylinder sold before the latest revision. Even after the increase, officials indicate that losses have not been fully recovered.
The latest revision follows a broader rise in fuel prices. Petrol and diesel prices have increased by a cumulative Rs 7.50 per litre since mid-May, while compressed natural gas (CNG) rates have risen by about Rs 6 per kilogram. Global crude oil and fuel prices have remained volatile in recent months, increasing pressure on fuel retailers.
The March hike of Rs 60 per cylinder was linked to disruptions in global energy markets following tensions in the Middle East. Industry officials say that elevated international fuel prices continue to affect the cost of supplying domestic LPG in India.
Experts note that despite the latest revision, domestic LPG is still being sold below its full cost. As a result, future price movements may depend on international crude oil prices, fuel market trends and government policy decisions regarding consumer subsidies and fuel pricing.
Disclaimer: LPG prices are subject to periodic revision by oil marketing companies based on global energy prices, government policies and market conditions. Consumers should check the latest rates with their local distributor before booking a cylinder.
