Mumbai, June 6, 2026: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its crackdown on the manufacture, storage, and sale of banned gutkha and pan masala across the state. Over the past six days, the department has conducted raids at 203 locations, arrested 102 individuals, and taken action against 68 shops and hotels, leading to their closure.

The enforcement drive has gained momentum since IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe assumed charge as Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. Mundhe has directed officials to take strict action against those involved in the illegal trade of banned tobacco products and against activities that pose a threat to public health.

The commissioner has also announced that citizens can directly report complaints related to gutkha, pan masala, food adulteration, and substandard medicines. To facilitate public participation, the FDA has made available a toll-free helpline and an email address for lodging complaints.

The move comes amid allegations of corruption and irregularities within the department in recent months. The state government appointed Mundhe to strengthen transparency, accountability, and discipline within the FDA. Since taking charge on May 25, he has accelerated enforcement actions against banned tobacco products across Maharashtra.

As part of a special statewide operation, the FDA recently carried out a major seizure in Dhule district. Acting on intelligence inputs, officials intercepted a vehicle transporting banned gutkha and tobacco products on the Mumbai–Agra Highway and seized contraband worth approximately ₹18.5 lakh. A case has been registered against the driver, identified as Suresh Kumar Govariya, a resident of Rajasthan.

Known for his strict administrative approach and anti-corruption stance, Tukaram Mundhe has served in various key government positions during his career and is widely recognized for enforcing discipline and accountability in public administration.
