Pune News: RTO Employees Announce Indefinite Statewide Strike from June 16; Services Likely To Be Affected
Pune, June 15, 2026: Services at Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across Maharashtra are likely to face major disruptions as employees have called for an indefinite statewide strike beginning June 16, citing the government’s failure to address their long-pending demands.
According to the Motor Vehicles Department Employees’ Union, several issues related to employee service rules and promotions remain unresolved despite the approval of a revised organizational structure more than three-and-a-half years ago.
Union leaders allege that the government has yet to frame the necessary recruitment and service entry rules, preventing employees from receiving their rightful promotions. They further claim that matters which could have been resolved administratively have instead been delayed through prolonged procedural processes and repeated referrals to the government for guidance.

A meeting between union representatives and Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik was held around ten days ago to discuss the demands. However, the union alleged that the administration failed to provide even the official minutes of the meeting, leading to growing dissatisfaction among employees.
The decision to launch an indefinite strike was finalized during a union meeting held on June 13, according to Union General Secretary Surendra Sartape. He stated that RTO employees across the state are angered by what they describe as the administration’s delaying tactics and have demanded immediate positive action on their pending issues.
The strike is expected to significantly impact services at transport offices, including vehicle registration, driving licence processing, and documentation-related work. While the online learner’s licence process may continue, most office-based operations are likely to come to a standstill if the strike proceeds as planned.
With thousands of citizens and commercial vehicle operators dependent on RTO services, the proposed strike could lead to substantial inconvenience unless a resolution is reached between the government and employee representatives before June 16.
