Pune, June 16, 2026: Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology, will lay the Foundation Stone for Pune Yard Remodelling, Construction of 6 New Platforms and Other infrastructure works at Pune Railway Station in the august presence of various dignitaries on 17.06.2026.

Pune Junction Railway Station is one of the busiest railway stations on Central Railway and serves as the primary rail gateway for Pune city and the surrounding industrial and educational region.

Existing Infrastructure
Pune Junction currently operates with 6 main platforms for handling mail/express and passenger train services of which only 2 platforms have the capacity to accommodate mail & Express trains with more than 22 coaches.
The station presently handles a large inflow/outflow of passengers with 2 Entry/Exit points, 3 Foot Over bridges and other passenger amenities.


More than 200 trains originate/terminate/ pass through Pune station daily and the station handles more than 1.5 lakh passengers daily, making it one of the busiest railway stations in Maharashtra.

Pune Junction is presently operating close to its capacity which has necessitated major expansion and redevelopment projects. To make Pune a future-ready Mega terminal, infrastructure works including comprehensive yard remodelling, construction of 6 new platforms and 3rd entry works have been taken up at a cost of Rs.473 crore.

Proposed Infrastructure Works at a glance:
A. New Platforms, Platform Extension and Other Works  
• To handle additional traffic and run longer trains, 06 new full-length platforms no. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12 are being constructed.
• Platforms no. 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 are being extended to accommodate 24/26 coach trains. Removal of Double Diamond Slip (DDS) is being undertaken to improve operational flexibility.
• 2 UP & DOWN run-through R&D lines have been provided for faster train handling.
• A 3rd additional line between Hadapsar and Ghorpadi Coaching Maintenance Complex (GCMC) is being constructed for decongestion and segregation of suburban and long-distance traffic.

B. Signalling & Infrastructure  
• For modern and safe operations, a New Electronic Interlocking with new EI Building and 03 Object Controller Buildings is being commissioned.
• An Electric Loco Shed is being provided for loco maintenance to improve reliability.

C. Passenger Amenities & Station Development  
• To enhance passenger experience, Cover Over Platforms, Toilet Blocks, Water Stands, Seating arrangements, Lights, Fans, Standard Signages, Train Indication Boards and all other passenger amenities are being provided for the new platforms.
• A new 3rd Entry/Exit at R B Mill Road side is being developed with Booking Office, TC Office, Waiting Room, Toilet Block and Station Building to decongest the main entry.
• For seamless passenger movement, a 06 Mtr wide Foot Over Bridge and one Skywalk connecting the old PF block to the new PF block are being constructed.
• A Permanent Holding Area is also being developed to manage crowd during peak and festival seasons.

The Yard remodelling project and construction of 6 additional platforms combined with other infrastructure works will significantly enhance operational capacity, decongest the station, and provide improved, affordable travel for passengers in the region.
