Pune, June 17, 2026: Union Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw has assured that the News Division of Pune Akashvani (All India Radio) will continue to function and that there is no proposal before the Central Government to shut it down.

The clarification comes amid widespread speculation in recent days regarding the possible closure of the historic Pune Akashvani News Division. The issue was raised before the minister during his visit to Pune for the inauguration of various railway development projects and the launch of new rail services.

During a meeting at Pune International Airport, concerns over reports suggesting the closure of the news division were brought to the minister’s attention. A request was made to retain the department, considering its longstanding contribution to journalism and public communication in the region.

Responding to the concerns, Vaishnaw categorically stated that there is no plan to discontinue the Pune Akashvani News Division. He emphasized that the Central Government is instead focused on strengthening and modernising Akashvani stations across the country.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, efforts are underway to modernise and empower Akashvani centres nationwide. Our objective is to make Akashvani more effective, contemporary and people-centric. Therefore, the question of shutting down the Pune Akashvani News Division does not arise. On the contrary, we are working to further strengthen local news coverage and public outreach,” the minister said.

The Pune Akashvani News Division has a rich legacy spanning several decades and enjoys a deep emotional connection with listeners across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and surrounding districts. It has long served as a trusted platform for local news, social issues, cultural programmes and public-interest broadcasting.

The public sentiment in favour of preserving the news division was conveyed to the minister, highlighting the institution’s importance in the cultural, social and journalistic history of Pune. Vaishnaw reiterated the Centre’s commitment to upgrading Akashvani infrastructure across Maharashtra and the rest of the country while preserving its role as a credible source of information.

The assurance has effectively put to rest concerns regarding the future of the Pune Akashvani News Division. The development has been welcomed by listeners, media professionals and citizens who regard the station as an integral part of Pune’s heritage.

The meeting also underscored the Central Government’s commitment to preserving, modernising and strengthening Pune Akashvani, ensuring that the institution continues to serve future generations in an enhanced and technologically advanced form.
