Short Breaks Over Long Holidays: How Gen Z Is Changing Travel Trends in India

23 June, 2026: India’s Generation Z is reshaping travel habits by moving away from the traditional concept of one long annual vacation and embracing frequent weekend getaways and short breaks, according to a recent survey.

The study, conducted among 2,012 Gen Z respondents aged between 18 and 29 across 11 Indian cities in April 2026, found that 87% prefer trips lasting less than a week. Weekend getaways emerged as the most popular choice, followed by short breaks of three to five days, while longer holidays were found to be less common among young travellers.

According to the survey, 70% of respondents would rather take three short trips throughout the year than spend their vacation days on a single extended holiday. The findings suggest that travel for Gen Z is often spontaneous and driven by a desire to unwind, escape daily routines, or make the most of free weekends rather than follow carefully planned itineraries.

The report also highlighted changing booking patterns among young travellers. Nearly 66% said they book trips within days or weeks of departure instead of planning months in advance. In addition, 67% stated that no two trips they have taken are the same, reflecting a strong preference for unique and personalised travel experiences.

Travel has increasingly become a form of self-expression for Gen Z. The survey found that 87% believe the way they travel reflects their personality, while 92% said it is important that their destination or accommodation aligns with their personal tastes rather than simply being a popular choice.

Experiences and local culture appear to matter more than traditional sightseeing. Around 80% of respondents said small moments and everyday experiences during a trip are more meaningful than visiting famous tourist attractions. Many young travellers prefer exploring local markets, neighbourhood stores and community spaces instead of spending their time at well-known landmarks.

The report described Gen Z as an “anti-itinerary” generation that values flexibility over rigid schedules. About 64% intentionally leave parts of their travel plans open for spontaneous exploration, while nearly two-thirds said they often travel with the simple goal of relaxing, slowing down and taking a break from everyday pressures.

Accommodation has also become a key part of the overall travel experience. Around 82% of respondents said choosing the right place to stay is very important when planning a trip, while 78% reported spending at least half of their travel time at their accommodation. Features such as balconies, terraces, shared living spaces, and proximity to local streets and markets ranked among the most desired amenities.

The findings indicate a broader shift in travel preferences among young Indians. Rather than prioritising packed itineraries and major tourist attractions, Gen Z travellers are increasingly seeking flexibility, authenticity and meaningful experiences that reflect their individual interests and lifestyles.

The survey suggests that for India’s youngest generation of travellers, travel is no longer just about reaching a destination, it is about creating personal experiences, discovering local culture and enjoying the freedom to explore on their own terms.
