New Metro route will make airport travel easier; double-decker flyovers and more Metro expansions also planned.

Air travellers in Pune can soon expect a smoother journey to the airport, as a new Metro route connecting Kalyani Nagar Metro Station to Pune International Airport in Lohegaon has been finalised.

The announcement was made by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol after a meeting with Pune Metro and civic officials on Wednesday. The proposal will now be sent to the Pune Municipal Corporation for approval, followed by the Maharashtra government and the Central government.

At present, Metro passengers travelling to the airport have to get down at Yerawada Metro Station and take a cab or auto to reach the terminal. The new direct Metro link is expected to make airport travel more convenient and reduce dependence on taxis.

The new route will connect the airport with all major Metro corridors in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. Kalyani Nagar is already on Metro Line 2 (Vanaz–Ramwadi) and will also connect to the upcoming Line 4 (Khadakwasla–Kharadi). Through the Civil Court interchange, passengers from Line 1 (PCMC–Swargate) and the upcoming Line 3 (Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar) will also be able to reach the airport easily.

Double-Decker Flyovers Planned

Mohol also directed Pune Metro officials to prepare plans for double-decker flyovers on key roads to ease traffic congestion.

One proposed flyover will run from Garbage Depot to Chandni Chowk, with the lower level for road traffic and the upper level for the Metro. Another double-decker flyover has been proposed between Paud Phata and Vandevi Temple, which is expected to reduce congestion at around five major traffic signals on Paud Road.

In addition, Mohol instructed Metro officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to extend the proposed Shewalewadi–Hadapsar–Katraj Metro route further up to Chandni Chowk and Wakad, expanding Metro connectivity across all parts of Pune.

He also reviewed the progress of proposals submitted to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, including the Bhakti Shakti Chowk road widening project and additional Metro corridors.
