Pipeline Fault Disrupts Water Supply in Baner, Balewadi; Residents Raise Concerns Over Ageing Infrastructure
Pune, July 3, 2026: A major pipeline fault disrupted water supply in parts of Baner and Balewadi on Friday, leaving thousands of residents without water for several hours and once again drawing attention to Pune’s ageing water distribution infrastructure.
The disruption occurred after a valve malfunction developed on the 1,000-mm pipeline that carries water from Chandni Chowk to Baner and Balewadi. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) temporarily suspended water supply to carry out emergency repairs, resulting in a day-long interruption.

The unexpected outage caused inconvenience to residents, many of whom said they received information about the fault through social media. Citizens also questioned the condition of the city’s water infrastructure, alleging that frequent breakdowns point to inadequate maintenance.
The incident coincided with a pre-scheduled water shutdown in parts of Sahakarnagar, Bibwewadi and other areas along Satara Road, where PMC had halted supply for maintenance work. Water supply in those localities is expected to resume by Friday morning.
Residents said repeated pipeline failures, coupled with Pune’s alternate-day water supply schedule, have made water availability increasingly unpredictable. Civic activist Bhushan Kamble claimed that four to five major pipeline faults have been reported across Pune over the past two weeks and urged the civic administration to strengthen maintenance efforts and ensure timely repairs.
According to PMC officials, the valve failure was triggered by fluctuations in water pressure. Repair teams were deployed immediately, they said, but restoring normal supply takes time as airlocks develop when pipelines remain empty for extended periods. Officials added that efforts are underway to remove the airlocks and restore water supply as quickly as possible.
The recurring issue has also been discussed during recent PMC general body meetings, where several corporators demanded urgent upgrades to the city’s water distribution network. They also called on the civic body to provide water tankers to areas facing prolonged disruptions until regular supply is restored.
