Pune, July 6, 2026: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for parts of Maharashtra, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours, particularly across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the Konkan coast, and the ghat areas of Pune district.

The warning follows continuous heavy rainfall that began in early July after an unusually dry June. Persistent downpours have already triggered landslides in several locations, prompting precautionary measures, including the closure of schools in some districts.

According to IMD weather forecasting head Dr. S. D. Sanap, the Konkan region and the Western Ghats have witnessed heavy to extremely heavy rainfall during the past 24 to 48 hours. Similar weather conditions are expected to continue over the next two days.

He said active cloud formation over the ghat regions of Mumbai and Pune, coupled with a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, has intensified rainfall activity across Maharashtra.

The IMD has issued Red Alerts for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and the ghat regions of Pune. The Red Alert for the Pune ghat areas is expected to remain in force through Tuesday, while Yellow Alerts have been issued for several other parts of the state.

Dr. Sanap urged residents of Mumbai, Pune, and nearby areas to remain vigilant over the next 48 hours and to follow official advisories issued by local authorities.

He also noted that Maharashtra recorded a rainfall deficit of nearly 47% in June, but the recent spell of widespread rain has significantly improved the seasonal rainfall position, reducing the deficit to approximately 15%.

Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel in areas under Red and Yellow Alerts due to the possibility of landslides, waterlogging, flooding, and other rain-related incidents. Citizens have also been urged to stay updated with official weather bulletins as heavy rainfall is likely to persist over the coming two days.
