20-Year Wait Ends: Maharashtra Gets Green Light For 10 TMC Narmada Water
New Delhi, July 8, 2026: A long-pending issue over Maharashtra’s share of Narmada River water has been resolved, paving the way for the state to receive 10 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Tuesday.
The breakthrough came during a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah. The meeting was attended by Fadnavis, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, and Union Minister C.R. Patil.

According to Fadnavis, the meeting ended a dispute that had remained unresolved for nearly two decades. While Maharashtra had previously received electricity benefits from the Narmada Project, it had not received its allocated share of 10 TMC of water.
The Chief Minister said the meeting also cleared the proposal for Maharashtra to draw 5 TMC of water from the Ukai Dam, while the remaining 5 TMC will be supplied through the proposed Narmada-Tapi Diversion Scheme. Gujarat has agreed in principle to allow Maharashtra to lift water from the Ukai reservoir during the monsoon season, when adequate water is available. The proposal has also received approval from Amit Shah and Union Minister C.R. Patil.
Fadnavis thanked the Union ministers and the Gujarat government for supporting the decision, adding that the Maharashtra government is preparing a detailed implementation plan for lifting water from the Ukai Dam. He said the additional water is expected to significantly benefit several districts in North Maharashtra.
The Chief Minister also announced that several other pending issues related to the Narmada Project were resolved during the meeting. Maharashtra’s outstanding financial liability has reportedly been reduced to ₹27 crore, with the remaining dues being waived.
Separately, Fadnavis said a review meeting on renewable energy initiatives was held under the chairmanship of Union Minister Pralhad Joshi. He thanked the Centre for allocating 51% of the total funding under the PM-KUSUM scheme to Maharashtra, the highest share among all states.
Fadnavis said the state has sought continued support under the revised PM-KUSUM scheme and reaffirmed its commitment to expanding the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar programme. He expressed confidence that Maharashtra would continue to receive financial assistance and cooperation from the Centre for renewable energy projects.
