Waterlogged burrows, lush vegetation and an increase in the availability of prey such as frogs and rodents force snakes to move around more frequently. This also coincides with the breeding season for many snake species, making encounters with both adult snakes and hatchlings more likely.
Many people assume that baby snakes are harmless because of their small size. However, experts warn that hatchlings of venomous species are venomous from birth and should never be handled or approached. Maintaining a safe distance is the best way to avoid accidents.
If you are walking outdoors during the rainy season, wear closed footwear and remain alert, especially near bushes, tall grass, piles of leaves, rocks, drains and waterlogged areas where snakes may take shelter. At night, always use a torch while walking in poorly lit places. Keeping your surroundings clean and free of clutter can also reduce the chances of snakes entering residential areas.

In the event of a snakebite, avoid common home remedies such as cutting the wound, tying a tight tourniquet, applying herbal pastes or trying to suck out the venom. These methods can do more harm than good. Wash the bite area gently with clean water, keep the affected person calm, limit movement of the bitten limb and seek medical attention immediately. Timely treatment and anti-snake venom, available at many government hospitals, can save lives.
Wildlife experts also urge people not to believe myths surrounding snakes. Snakes play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by controlling rodent populations and are an important part of the ecosystem. Staying informed, remaining calm and following the correct safety measures can help prevent snakebite incidents during the monsoon season.
