Pune, July 15, 2026: The family of a woman critically injured in a hit-and-run accident in Kothrud has levelled serious allegations against the police, claiming that the investigation was mishandled and demanding intervention by senior authorities.
In a statement issued through the family’s representative and employer, the victim’s family has alleged that they were discouraged from pursuing legal action after the accident and have sought a fresh investigation, stricter charges against the accused driver, and accountability for those handling the case.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on the evening of July 4 near the Kelewadi traffic signal on Paud Road in Kothrud. The family alleges that 23-year-old Nikita Ambure, her husband Ramakant Garje, and their 2½-year-old son were travelling on a two-wheeler when a 12-wheel dumper truck allegedly rammed into them from behind.
The family claims the truck driver fled the scene after the collision, leaving the injured victims on the road. While the child escaped without major injuries, Nikita sustained life-threatening injuries and was initially taken to a nearby hospital before being shifted to Sahyadri Hospital, Deccan, for specialised treatment.
According to the statement, Nikita suffered extensive pelvic injuries and underwent multiple emergency surgeries. The family has claimed that her treatment is expected to cost around ₹45 lakh and that she may require prolonged rehabilitation.
Speaking to Pune Pulse, Nikita’s mother, Sangeeta Ambure, described the immense financial and emotional hardship her family is facing following the accident.
“I work as a domestic helper in the Kothrud area while also caring for my paralysed husband. Since my daughter’s accident, our lives have been completely shattered. In just four days, the hospital bill has reached nearly ₹16 lakh. It is impossible for us to arrange such a huge amount,” she said.
Seeking a thorough investigation into the incident, Sangeeta alleged that neither the dumper driver nor the vehicle owner has accepted responsibility for the mounting medical expenses. “I want a proper investigation and justice for my daughter,” she said.
She also alleged that officials at the Paud Police Chowky behaved discourteously with the family after the accident and repeatedly encouraged them to settle the matter with the dumper owner.
“My only prayer is that my daughter recovers, comes out of the ICU safely, and is able to live her life again with dignity and good health,” Sangeeta added.
The mother of the accident victim stated that a police officer from Kothrud Police Station advised the family against registering a complaint and suggested they resolve the matter privately with the transport company.
Sangeeta further claimed that the truck owner’s office member initially did not extend assistance and later allegedly offered an amount that the family considered inadequate given the victim’s medical condition and mounting treatment expenses.
The Ambure family said they have exhausted their savings on medical treatment and are struggling financially. Nikita’s mother, Sangeeta Ambure, who works as a domestic helper, is also the primary caregiver for her paralysed husband. The family says the accident has left them without a stable source of income while facing substantial medical expenses.
The Sahyadri hospital Deccan denied giving any information regarding the accident victim.
