Pimpri-Chinchwad, July 15: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has suspended Chief Engineer (Environment) Sanjay Narayan Kulkarni and Executive Engineer Yogesh Sopan Alhat and initiated a departmental inquiry against them over alleged negligence in connection with the Moshi Garbage Depot collapse that claimed the lives of nine contract workers earlier this month.

The action follows a review of the explanations submitted by both officers in response to show-cause notices issued by Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi after the July 8 tragedy. The Commissioner had directed both officials to submit their explanations by July 14.

According to the civic administration, the replies submitted by the two officers were found to be unsatisfactory and misleading, prompting the suspension order. The administration has alleged that both officers were guilty of negligence in their duties and failure to discharge their responsibilities, particularly in ensuring safety and proper supervision at the garbage depot.

Chief Engineer Sanjay Kulkarni was responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations at the Moshi Garbage Depot, monitoring the stability of waste mounds, and ensuring adequate safety measures. However, on July 8, a massive garbage mound collapsed onto the RCC administrative building, killing nine contract workers.

The PCMC observed that there were serious lapses in supervision and implementation of safety protocols, amounting to misconduct and dereliction of duty. A departmental inquiry has been initiated against both officials under the provisions of the Maharashtra Civil Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules.

Pending completion of the inquiry, Kulkarni and Alhat have been placed under suspension with immediate effect. During the suspension period, they have been directed not to leave anywhere without prior permission from the competent authority.

The Moshi Garbage Depot collapse has sparked widespread criticism over safety standards at the facility and prompted the civic administration to initiate disciplinary action against officials responsible for overseeing its operations.
