Raipur consumer commission rules in favour of a Maruti Suzuki owner who alleged repeated engine problems after using E20 petrol, even as the Centre continues to maintain that ethanol-blended fuel is safe for compatible vehicles.

Pune: A district consumer commission in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, has delivered what is being described as India’s first consumer court ruling involving alleged damage linked to E20 petrol, directing Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. and the dealership to compensate a vehicle owner after repeated engine-related complaints.

The complainant, who owned a Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Strong Hybrid Zeta Plus manufactured in January 2023, alleged that the vehicle began developing engine problems after refuelling with E20 petrol. According to the complaint, the SUV suffered from poor engine performance, repeated misfiring and a noticeable drop in fuel efficiency. Despite several visits to authorised service centres and multiple repair attempts, the problems allegedly persisted, resulting in substantial repair expenses.

The manufacturer and dealer denied that E20 fuel was responsible for the defects. They argued that the vehicle was fully compatible with E20 petrol and attributed the problems to routine wear and tear, maintenance-related issues and other unrelated factors.

However, after examining the records, the Raipur District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission observed that the vehicle owner had repeatedly approached authorised workshops without receiving a lasting solution. The commission noted that the recurring nature of the complaints strengthened the consumer’s case.

What The Commission Ordered

The commission directed the manufacturer and dealer to resolve the consumer’s grievance within 45 days. According to reports, the company has been asked to provide a replacement vehicle of the same model that is compatible with E20 fuel. If this is not possible within the stipulated period, it has been directed to refund the vehicle’s purchase price of around ₹20.5 lakh.

In addition, the commission awarded ₹1 lakh as compensation for mental harassment and ₹10,000 towards litigation costs. The order also states that interest would be payable if the compensation is not paid within the prescribed time.

The complainant had also submitted evidence claiming that a white viscous residue had accumulated in the fuel system after the use of E20 petrol and that engine damage continued despite repairs. The commission accepted that repeated failures to rectify the problem amounted to a deficiency in service.

E20 Fuel Debate Continues

The ruling comes amid an ongoing national debate over ethanol-blended petrol.

The Centre has been promoting E20 petrol, a blend containing 20 per cent ethanol and 80 per cent petrol, as part of its ethanol-blending programme aimed at reducing crude oil imports, lowering carbon emissions and supporting India’s sugarcane and biofuel industries.

The government achieved its target of 20 per cent ethanol blending ahead of schedule and has maintained that all E20-compatible vehicles can safely use the fuel.

However, some motorists have reported lower fuel efficiency after switching to E20. Transport experts note that ethanol contains less energy than conventional petrol, which can result in a 3-5 per cent reduction in mileage, particularly under certain driving conditions. The government has acknowledged this difference in fuel economy but maintains that it does not indicate engine damage.

Government Rejects Engine Damage Claims

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has repeatedly dismissed allegations that E20 petrol damages vehicle engines. He has stated that no verified complaints of engine damage caused solely by E20 fuel have been received by the government and has described many social media claims as misinformation.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has also issued public clarifications stating that E20 fuel has undergone scientific evaluation and is being used successfully in several countries. It has advised consumers to use E20 only in vehicles certified as E20-compatible and to follow manufacturers’ recommendations regarding maintenance and servicing.

Recently, authorities also registered an FIR against a YouTuber over videos allegedly spreading misleading claims about ethanol-blended fuel causing widespread engine damage. Government agencies said the action was taken after the videos were found to contain unverified technical claims that could create unnecessary panic among consumers. Officials reiterated that technical concerns should be supported by scientific evidence rather than anecdotal social media content.

What Vehicle Owners Should Know

Automobile experts advise motorists to:

  • Use only the fuel recommended in the vehicle owner’s manual.
  • Confirm whether the vehicle is E20-compatible before regularly using E20 petrol.
  • Get persistent issues such as engine knocking, misfiring or sudden mileage loss inspected at authorised service centres.
  • Keep detailed service records and fuel bills if recurring defects develop.
  • Avoid relying solely on social media advice for technical or mechanical issues.

The Raipur commission’s order is specific to the facts and evidence presented in this individual case and does not amount to a general judicial finding that E20 petrol damages all vehicles. However, the ruling is expected to be closely watched as discussions continue over India’s ethanol-blending programme and consumer experiences with E20 fuel.

Disclaimer: This order relates to an individual consumer dispute and should not be interpreted as proof that E20 fuel causes engine damage in all vehicles. Vehicle owners should follow manufacturer guidelines and seek professional inspection if they experience mechanical problems.
