Pune: Baner Police Book Samarth Group Builder, Associates After Pet Dog Allegedly Dies Of Heatstroke Following Demolition
Pune, July 24, 2026: The Baner Police have registered an FIR against a city builder, his associates, a JCB operator and another unidentified person after a pet dog allegedly died of heatstroke following the demolition of its shelter at an animal care centre in Baner.
The case was registered on July 23 based on a complaint filed by Sandeep Mahadev Swami, who operates an animal care, bird training, dog grooming and pet care centre on the Baner–Pashan Link Road.
According to the complaint, Swami had left the centre on April 30, 2026, after ensuring that the dogs, cats and birds housed there had food and water. While he was away, a JCB machine allegedly demolished a cage housing animals and cut down a nearby babul tree that provided shade to the enclosure.
When Swami returned at around 7 pm, he allegedly discovered that his female pet dog, Goldie, had been left tied to an iron mesh inside the damaged enclosure and exposed to the intense summer heat for several hours.
The complainant alleged that Goldie had suffered severe heatstroke and was found unconscious. A veterinarian reportedly administered treatment, including medicines and an injection, but the dog died on May 2. A veterinary certificate is said to have identified heatstroke as the cause of death.
Swami also alleged that he was threatened when he questioned those involved in the demolition.
Based on the complaint, the Baner Police have booked Kailash Wani, Chairman of Samarth Group, Kaivalya Wani, Shivraj Kedari, Abhijit Kedari, Abhishek Kedari, Sangameshwar Wale, a JCB operator and one unidentified individual.
The FIR has been registered under Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, along with relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 3(5), 324(1), 325 and 351(1).
Assistant Police Inspector Balaji Sanap of Baner Police Station is conducting further investigation into the case.
