Ashadhi Ekadashi 2026: Significance Of Devshayani Ekadashi, Rituals To Follow
Ashadhi Ekadashi, also known as Devshayani Ekadashi, will be observed on July 25, 2026, and holds immense religious and spiritual significance in Hinduism. According to Hindu beliefs, this is the day when Lord Vishnu enters Yoga Nidra (divine sleep) in the Kshira Sagara (Ocean of Milk) for four months, marking the beginning of Chaturmas.
The day is considered highly auspicious for fasting, prayers, and devotional practices.
Why is it Called Devshayani Ekadashi?
According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Vishnu enters a state of divine sleep on Devshayani Ekadashi and remains in Yoga Nidra for four months until Prabodhini Ekadashi. This period, known as Chaturmas, is considered sacred, and many auspicious ceremonies such as weddings, housewarming functions, and other major celebrations are traditionally avoided during these four months.
Rituals to Follow on Devshayani Ekadashi
Devotees are encouraged to observe the following practices on the auspicious day:
- Wake up early and take a holy bath before sunrise.
- Wear clean white or yellow-coloured clothes, which are considered auspicious.
- Offer prayers to Lord Vishnu by worshipping his idol or image with traditional rituals.
- Chant the mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” 108 times.
- Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama if performing elaborate rituals is not possible.
- Observe a fast and consume only satvik (pure vegetarian) food.
- Donate food, clothes or other essentials to the needy as an act of charity.
Practices to Avoid
Religious traditions advise devotees to refrain from certain activities on Devshayani Ekadashi, including:
- Avoid consuming non-vegetarian food, alcohol, onion and garlic.
- Stay away from any form of addiction or intoxicants.
- Do not engage in arguments, use abusive language or speak untruths.
- Avoid wearing black-coloured clothing, as it is considered inauspicious.
- Women are traditionally advised to avoid washing their hair on this day, according to religious customs.
- Do not pluck or disrespect Tulsi (Holy Basil) leaves, as the plant is considered sacred to Lord Vishnu.
Spiritual Significance
Devshayani Ekadashi is regarded as one of the most important Ekadashis of the year. Devotees believe that observing the fast with sincerity, offering prayers to Lord Vishnu, and engaging in charitable acts bring spiritual merit, prosperity, and inner peace.
Religious scholars also advise maintaining a calm, positive, and devotional atmosphere at home throughout the day to seek Lord Vishnu’s blessings during the commencement of Chaturmas.
