Stray Dogs Attack 6-Month-Old Baby in Junnar, Infant Shifted to Pune’s Sassoon Hospital
Pune: A six-month-old baby girl was seriously injured after being attacked by stray dogs in Junnar, Maharashtra, raising fresh concerns over the growing stray dog population in the area.
The incident took place near the construction site of the new administrative building at the Junnar tehsildar office. According to the report, the infant, identified as Navinanchi, was near her home while her mother was working nearby when stray dogs entered the area and attacked her.
The dogs reportedly bit the baby on several parts of her body. She suffered severe injuries to her hand, with one finger reportedly severed, along with wounds to her cheek, shoulder and near the eye.
Hearing the child’s cries, her mother rushed to the spot. By then, however, the dogs had fled from the area.
The critically injured infant was initially taken to Junnar Rural Hospital. Medical officer Dr Rahul Sarvade provided primary treatment, following which she was shifted to Sassoon General Hospital in Pune for further treatment considering the seriousness of her injuries.
Several labourers reportedly live with their families in temporary accommodation near the construction site where the attack occurred. The incident has created fear among workers and local residents, particularly over the safety of young children.
The attack has also renewed attention on the stray dog problem in Junnar. According to the report, the Junnar Municipal Council had earlier sterilised around 324 stray dogs as part of measures to control their population. The sterilisation drive, however, had remained suspended for some time.
Municipal Council president Sujata Kajale said a fresh tender process has now been initiated and the drive to catch and sterilise stray dogs is expected to resume soon.
The incident has prompted residents to demand stronger and timely measures from the civic administration to manage the stray dog population and prevent similar attacks in the future.
