Sarnath Now A UNESCO World Heritage Site
New Delhi, July 26, 2026: Sarnath, one of Buddhism’s most revered pilgrimage sites in Uttar Pradesh, has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, marking a significant milestone for India’s cultural and spiritual legacy.
Reacting to the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described it as a “proud moment for every Indian” and welcomed the global recognition of the historic site.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said he was delighted that Sarnath had received UNESCO World Heritage status. He highlighted the site’s deep association with Lord Buddha, who delivered his first sermon at Sarnath after attaining enlightenment. Modi noted that Buddha’s timeless message of wisdom, compassion, and harmony continues to inspire people across the world.
The Prime Minister said the UNESCO recognition celebrates India’s rich civilisational and spiritual heritage while strengthening Sarnath’s position as a globally significant cultural destination. He added that the inscription is expected to encourage more visitors from around the world to explore the sacred site and connect with the teachings and ideals of Lord Buddha.
Sarnath, located near Varanasi, is one of the four most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites and is home to several ancient monuments, stupas, monasteries, and archaeological remains that reflect India’s rich Buddhist heritage.
The UNESCO inscription is expected to boost international tourism, enhance conservation efforts, and further reinforce India’s standing as a custodian of some of the world’s most significant cultural and historical treasures.
