Pune: CM Devendra Fadnavis Directs Fast-Track Implementation Of High-Capacity Transit And E-RTS Project For Pimpri Chinchwad
Pimpri, July 28, 2026: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed officials to expedite the implementation of the High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) and Electric Rapid Transit System (E-RTS) project to strengthen public transportation in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. He instructed the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to immediately begin all administrative, technical, and planning work and complete the pilot project within the stipulated timeline.
The directions were issued during a high-level review meeting chaired by the Chief Minister at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai on July 27. The meeting focused on addressing the growing transportation needs of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad amid rapid urbanisation, rising population, and increasing pressure on existing public transport infrastructure.
Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Ajit Pawar, senior officials from the Urban Development, Finance, Revenue, and Environment departments, Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi, PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, PCMC Commissioner Dr. Vijay Suryawanshi, PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, and Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissioner Vinaykumar Choubey were among those present.
During the meeting, PCMC Commissioner Dr. Vijay Suryawanshi presented the concept of the Electric Rapid Transit System (E-RTS), describing it as a modern, fully electric public transport system that combines the speed and comfort of a metro with the flexibility of rubber-tyred electric vehicles. Each vehicle will have the capacity to carry over 240 passengers.
As part of the first phase, a 17-kilometre pilot corridor has been proposed, connecting Godown Chowk, Kudalwadi Chowk, Auto Cluster, Kalewadi Phata, Jagtap Dairy Chowk, and Wakad. The pilot project is planned to be implemented in collaboration with Maha Metro within the next one to one-and-a-half years.
If the pilot proves successful, the E-RTS network will be expanded across the proposed HCMTR corridors and all Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes in the city. The system is also planned to provide seamless connectivity with metro stations, railway stations, and other modes of public transport, creating an integrated and commuter-friendly transit network.
Officials said the project is expected to reduce traffic congestion, lower air pollution, encourage greater use of public transport, and provide citizens with a faster, safer, and environmentally sustainable mode of travel.
Following the presentation, Chief Minister Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Ajit Pawar, along with senior officials, welcomed the proposal and endorsed the project. The Chief Minister instructed PCMC to initiate all necessary administrative and technical procedures without delay and ensure the timely completion of the pilot project.
