Pune: Congress Warns Of Protests During Amit Shah’s Visit, Mohan Joshi Demands Answers On Alleged Student Lathi-Charge
Pune, July 28, 2026: Senior Maharashtra Congress leader and former MLA Mohan Joshi has warned of protests during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s proposed visit to Pune on August 1 unless he responds to allegations of police action against protesting students in Delhi.
In a statement issued on Monday, Joshi demanded that Shah clarify the circumstances surrounding the alleged lathi-charge and use of pellet guns on students during a recent protest in the national capital. He said that if no explanation is provided, the Congress would oppose the Home Minister’s Pune visit.
Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Pune to attend the Lokmanya Tilak Award ceremony.
Joshi alleged that several students were injured during the police action and claimed that a journalist was also hurt in the incident. He further stated that some of the injured students were later presented before the media by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.
According to Joshi, there is widespread public anger over the reported police action. He said students protesting peacefully for reforms in the country’s education system and competitive examination process should have been engaged in dialogue rather than subjected to force.
“The Central Government had a responsibility to protect students and listen to their concerns. Instead, the Delhi Police allegedly resorted to force. As the Delhi Police functions under the Union Home Ministry, Amit Shah must explain under whose orders the action was taken,” Joshi said in his statement.
He maintained that the Union Home Minister cannot distance himself from the issue, as the Delhi Police falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The statement comes ahead of Shah’s scheduled Pune visit, with the Congress signalling that demonstrations may be held if its demands for an explanation are not addressed.
