Pune: Student Groups Urge SPPU to Act Against Colleges Over Vacant Faculty Posts
Pune, July 28: Various student organisations have urged Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) to initiate strict action against affiliated colleges that have failed to fill vacant posts of principals, directors, professors and non-teaching staff despite repeated directives from the university.
A delegation representing student organisations and political groups submitted a memorandum to SPPU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Suresh Gosavi, alleging that several affiliated colleges have ignored university orders to recruit faculty and administrative staff as mandated under the Maharashtra Public Universities Act.
According to the delegation, the Act requires affiliated colleges to maintain the prescribed number of principals, professors, directors and non-teaching staff as determined by the university and the state government. However, despite repeated reminders from SPPU, many institutions have yet to begin the recruitment process, adversely affecting the quality of education available to students.
The student bodies also alleged that several colleges admitted first-year students without complying with the university’s recruitment directives. They further claimed that some institutions have appointed teachers on a temporary basis at meagre honorariums, resulting in the financial exploitation of faculty members.
The delegation demanded immediate and stringent action against colleges violating the university’s directives and recruitment norms.
Responding to the memorandum, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Suresh Gosavi acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and assured the delegation that strict action would be initiated against non-compliant colleges within eight days.
The delegation included Adv. Suresh Khurpe and Anil Shevare of the Vidyarthi Vikas Manch; Atul Zodge of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi; Adv. Faiyaz Sheikh from the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Legal Cell; Ulhas Agnihotri of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena; Amarjeet Pabme of the Nationalist Students’ Congress; and Rohan Kale, among others.
