Pune: On September 19, Karnataka High Court suggested to the Central Government that an age limit should be fixed for the use of social media while observing that even school students are addicted to it.

As per the information provided, the blocking order by the Ministry of Information Technology under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act was continued by a single bench.

This was challenged in the Karnataka High Court by social media app X (formerly Twitter). The petition was heard before a bench of Justice G Narendra and Justice Vijayakumar A Patil.

As per the information received, a bench of the Karnataka High Court had imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh on the company. Arguing on appeal, the company said the imposition of such a penalty was manifestly unjust.

This effectively bars other arbitrators from challenging the blocking order in violation of Section 69A of the act or the blocking rules. If the single bench judgement is upheld, it will encourage the central government to issue more blocking orders.

During the hearing, Justice G. Narendra said, ”The government should consider fixing the age limit for social media use. When a user registers, he or she has to provide certain content.

Today, school-going children are addicted to social media. Justice G also added that things that corrupt minds should be removed from the internet.”
