Pune: Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, advocates for young individuals to dedicate 12 hours per day to work for India to effectively compete with economies that have experienced significant advancements over the past two to three decades.
Murthy emphasizes that India’s work productivity is currently among the lowest globally and suggests that the country’s youth must invest additional hours of work, similar to the efforts made by Japan and Germany following World War II, to rival nations such as China. During a podcast conversation, Murthy expressed, “India’s work productivity is one of the lowest in the world. To compete with countries that have made significant progress, we must enhance work productivity, minimize corruption in the government, and reduce bureaucratic delays in decision-making. Therefore, our youth needs to take ownership of their country and be willing to work diligently for extended hours, similar to the approach adopted by the Germans and Japanese post-World War II.”
Murthy emphasized the importance of a culture of determination, discipline, and hard work in improving work productivity. He believes that the government’s effectiveness is dependent on the culture of the people and that India needs to improve in these areas. In regards to the 75th year of India’s freedom, Murthy urged the youth to take responsibility for building upon the respect India has gained in the international community.
To gain respect, performance is the only way, as I have emphasized previously. Performance leads to recognition, recognition leads to respect, and respect leads to power. China serves as a prime example. Hence, I urge the youth of this nation to comprehend this and dedicate 12 hours a day for the next 20 or 50 years, whatever it takes, to make India the top two countries in terms of GDP.
It was emphasized by the tech giant that India’s per capita income will remain significantly lower than that of the United States, even if it surpasses it in size. Therefore, it is crucial for the youth of the country to prioritize growth. The message conveyed was that the progress being made would be futile if the most impoverished child in the most remote Indian village did not have access to education, healthcare, nutrition, shelter, and most importantly, hope for a better future for the next generation. The responsibility for this lies with the young people of India.
