Maharashtra : Around 12 lakh bovines to get treatment for infertility
For the first time, the department of animal husbandry has launched a campaign to treat infertility in 12 lakh female bovines in Maharashtra from November 20 to January 2024.
Animals are deemed infertile and are chosen for treatment if, within three months of delivery, they do not exhibit heat or an estrus cycle or do not conceive after two attempts at insemination.
Approximately 26 lakh of the 39 lakh cows in the state that are of reproductive age are thought to be infertile.
A senior animal husbandry department official stated that the department hopes to treat about 12 lakh infertile cows. If necessary, they will extend the campaign’s dates.
In order to conduct door-to-door inspections, the department has sent veterinarians to the village level. Uptil now, this campaign has treated about 3.7 lakh animals.
The officials examine the animal for deficiencies in vitamins or minerals, uterine infections, and inadequate blood flow to the genital regions. Next, a treatment plan is chosen, which may include dietary modifications, perineal massage, deworming, eradication, or extermination of ectoparasites. Taking care of the animals will benefit the dairy sector and guarantee farmers a consistent income.
