PMC’s poor planning leads to traffic jam on BMCC road during peak hours
On 4th January (Thursday), during peak travel hours i.e. between 10:30 am & 12 pm, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) felled hazardous branches of a big tree near Agharkar Research Institute on BMCC Road. However, citizens say that traffic jams had taken place in the area due to improper planning as neither the PMC nor the Pune Traffic Police had informed about this exercise prior to the citizens.
Speaking to Pune Pulse, Sumita Kale, Member, Vetal Tekdi Bachao Samiti, said “The PMC hadn’t put up any board regarding the operation due to which heavy traffic jam had happened. So, everybody was coming to BMCC road, turning & going back. I asked the people doing this operation that why wasn’t this informed to citizens prior or why wasn’t this done fast? But they just smiled & ignored me. The hazardous branches of the big tree were cut. The issue is not about the tree felling as much as it is more of improper planning & not informing people prior. If any kind of work is to be done, it must be done when traffic is not there like early in the morning etc. If it is to be done during rush hours, at least some boards, barricades etc must be put at the location. But nothing was done here.”
Ravindra Kamble, Horticulture Mistry, PMC, said “A dried up, big lemon tree was there on the BMCC road. It was there at such a position & was so dried up that it could have fallen anytime, leading to untoward accidents etc. There are several shops, establishments, continuous movement of people etc on BMCC road. Hence, removing the tree was done today by the PMC in the morning.”
