Former president Ramnath Kovind invites suggestions from public on ‘One Nation, One Election’
The public is being asked for suggestions by the committee on “One Nation, One Election” which is chaired by former president Ram Nath Kovind for making appropriate changes in the existing legal administrative framework to enable simultaneous elections in the country.
The committee requested the public to submit written suggestions via email at [email protected] or through its website, onoe.gov.in, in a public notification. The notification stated that the committee would review all suggestions submitted by January 15th.
The committee has met twice since its formation in September of last year. The panel had recently written to 33 state parties, seven registered unrecognized parties, and six national political parties to get their opinions and to discuss the idea of holding simultaneous polls on a “mutually agreed date.” Subsequently, it reminded the parties.
Members of the Law Commission, which is also looking into the possibility of simultaneous elections, were present at the committee’s second meeting.
Within the parameters of its mandate, the committee is supposed to evaluate and recommend amendments to the Constitution, the Representation of the People Act, 1950, the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and the rules made thereunder, and any other law or rules which would require amendments for the purpose of holding simultaneous elections, and to examine and make recommendations for holding simultaneous elections to the House of the People (Lok Sabha), state legislative assemblies, municipalities, and panchayats, keeping in view the existing framework under the Constitution of India and other statutory provisions.
In the interest of the nation, Kovind has endorsed the idea of holding simultaneous elections nationwide and urged all political parties to support it.
