As tourists pour into the city ahead of the January 22 opening of the Ram temple, airfares to Ayodhya have skyrocketed, with tickets to the temple town now costing more than those to other countries.

The cost of the passenger’s one-way direct ticket from Mumbai to the recently opened Maharishi Valmiki International Airport on January 19 is Rupees 20,700.

By comparison, the cost of a direct Air India Mumbai-Singapore flight on the same day is Rupees 10,987; the cost of a direct Mumbai-Bangkok flight is Rupees 13,800.

Furthermore, since there are fewer than 1,500 hotel rooms in Ayodhya, room prices have increased four to five times. All of Ayodhya’s most premium hotels have been completely booked.

A senior official from Thomas Cook (India) said that there has been a noticeable upsurge in spiritual tourism as more Indians want to start the New Year in a fortunate manner. Demand for the segment is significantly increasing—by more than 120%—compared to before the pandemic.

Data compiled by Thomas Cook shows that searches for Ayodhya increased by over 300% in December over October as the Ram temple’s inauguration approaches. The clientele is varied and includes young people, couples, families, and businesspeople.
