Ashwini Vaishnaw, Railway Minister addressed demands regarding the restoration of pre-COVID fare concessions for senior citizens and media persons, stating that every train passenger currently enjoys a 55% concession on their journey.

Responding to questions, Vaishnaw explained that the Indian Railway already provides a substantial concession, emphasizing that if a train ticket costs Rs 100, the railway charges only Rs 45, granting a Rs 55 concession.

Before the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, the Railways had offered a 50% concession on train fares for senior citizens and government-accredited journalists. Despite the full-fledged resumption of railway operations in June 2022, these concessions were not restored.

The issue has been a topic of discussion in both houses of parliament, with Vaishnaw maintaining a consistent stance on various occasions. The minister’s recent statement reinforces the existing 55% concession for all train passengers.

Vaishnaw was in Ahmedabad to review the progress of the ongoing bullet train project among other things.
