SpiceJet, one of India’s leading airlines, has issued an apology after a passenger faced an unusual ordeal during a flight from Mumbai to Bengaluru. Due to a malfunction in the lavatory door lock, the passenger found himself trapped inside for the entire duration of the flight. The incident adds to a series of recent challenges faced by airline service providers, including delays, passenger unrest, and, in a separate incident, an assault on a pilot.
The passenger, who attempted to use the washroom after takeoff, encountered a malfunctioning lavatory door lock, leaving him stranded for the entire Mumbai to Bengaluru journey. Efforts by the cabin crew to unlock the door from outside proved futile, requiring the intervention of an engineer upon landing in Bengaluru to release the trapped passenger.

SpiceJet’s Response:
SpiceJet has expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to the passenger and issued a public apology. The airline assured a full refund of the passenger’s airfare as a gesture of goodwill. Throughout the flight, the crew reportedly provided assistance and guidance to the trapped passenger. An engineer successfully opened the lavatory door upon arrival, and immediate medical support was offered to the passenger.
A photograph of a short message allegedly written by the crew to the trapped passenger has gone viral. The note, slipped under the locked bathroom door, conveyed the crew’s repeated attempts to open the door and reassured the passenger that rescue would occur upon landing.
This incident comes at a time when airlines are grappling with various challenges, including weather-related delays causing passenger dissatisfaction and a separate incident where a passenger assaulted a pilot onboard an IndiGo flight. The spotlight on airline service providers highlights concerns about communication and assistance during adverse situations.
