The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a rapid advance of the southwest monsoon this year, with favourable climatic conditions accelerating its progress. The monsoon is expected to arrive in Konkan on 6th June, bringing much-anticipated relief to the region.

The IMD had earlier predicted the monsoon’s entry into the South Andaman Sea by 19th May. Following this, the department announced that the monsoon would reach Kerala, the gateway to the country, by 31st May. This has heightened curiosity about the monsoon’s arrival in other parts of the state, according to IMD officials.

While the IMD provides forecasts for the monsoon’s arrival in the Andaman and Kerala regions, it does not specify dates for other states. However, based on historical data, the northward advance of the monsoon is mapped out. Accordingly, the monsoon is expected to enter Goa on 5th June and reach Konkan by 6 June. It is anticipated to arrive in Pune by 7 June.

Notably, no cyclones have formed in the Bay of Bengal or the Arabian Sea during the onset of this year’s monsoon, allowing for an uninterrupted progression. IMD officials expressed optimism that the monsoon will travel as expected without significant disruptions.

Since 2005, the IMD has been predicting the arrival date of the monsoon in Kerala using a statistical methodology. This year, the department estimated the monsoon would reach Kerala within a window of four days, either earlier or later than the predicted date.
