After heavy rainfall in Sangli district, a 400-year-old banyan tree, a historical heritage, fell victim to the weather, leaving environmental enthusiasts in sorrow. This incident has sparked questions about the potential revival of such trees and the methods to ensure their preservation.

In a dialogue with BBC, Sanjeev Walson, a tree conservationist from the Vriksha Sanvardhak and Vaghoba Habitat Foundation, discussed various options for salvaging these ancient giants. Having preserved thousands of trees across the state, Walson proposed several alternatives, including rejuvenation methods that could potentially extend the lifespan of these trees.

The recent collapse of the banyan tree, which served as a sanctuary for thousands of birds and held significant cultural and historical value, has prompted concerns. It was a sacred symbol for pilgrims traveling on the Miraj Road to Pandharpur.

When the decision to cut down these trees for the construction of a national highway by the Central Ministry of Transport sparked protests from environmentalists, social organizations, and locals, a debate ensued.

Walson emphasized the importance of exploring multiple avenues, suggesting that besides replanting trees like banyans, smaller trees could be strategically placed in various parts of cities, including Mumbai. He pointed out that Sangli now has several options, though he hadn’t yet observed the trees there, he noted the importance of having more than two options when trees like banyans fall.

Efforts to protect these fallen giants not only safeguard biodiversity but also preserve our cultural and historical roots.
