Pune- Two cases of cholera, a water-borne disease, have been reported in Bhosari. They are suspected to have contracted that disease from the water supplied by Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). A resident had taken a tap connection from a water pipeline of the municipal water supply department in Dhawade Wasti in Bhosari. However, due to improper installation, the connection leaked, contaminating the water.
It is suspected that the two patients involved were infected with cholera due to the contaminated water supply. Currently, both patients are undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of the PCMC’s Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital. The medical department has directed the water supply department to collect water from the Dhawade Wasti area for testing. The samples of three other patients have been sent to a laboratory for testing to check if there is an outbreak of cholera.
Special precautions are being taken to prevent a spike in the number of cases according to PCMC’s medical officer of health, Laxman Gophane. The municipal corporation’s medical officers have advised residents to boil water before drinking to avoid getting ill.
Cholera is an infection caused by eating or drinking food or water that is contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It remains a global threat to public health and is an indicator of a lack of social development. The symptoms of cholera include severe diarrhea, vomiting, thirst, leg pain, irritability, rapid heartbeat, and low blood pressure.
