Pune: Residents of housing societies in Pimpri Chinchwad are expressing concern over recent notices sent by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) regarding the lack of functional wet garbage processing units on their premises.

According to civic officials, the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, mandate that housing societies generating more than 100 kg of waste or occupying more than 500 sq ft must process wet garbage on their own. The notices indicate that garbage collection services will be halted for societies failing to comply with these rules.

A senior PCMC official clarified that the notices were initially sent to housing societies within the D zonal office limits to raise awareness about waste segregation and management norms. “We will continue to collect waste. We have been holding awareness programmes to appeal to people on how to manage waste,” stated a PCMC solid waste management official.

Residents, however, are worried about the implications. “PCMC officials stated in the notice that they would not collect garbage from July 15. When we contacted them, we were told that the notices are final and we must comply,” a resident from Pimple Gurav told Pune Pulse.

A resident voiced concerns over the practicality of the requirement. “There is no space available to install a garbage processing plant in our society. The developer did not build one at the time of construction, nor was any space reserved for it, yet he was granted a building completion certificate by PCMC,” he said.

The zonal officer noted that societies with functional garbage processing plants receive property tax concessions. “However, some societies are not making these plants operational while still availing tax benefits. The notices were intended to address these issues,” he added.

Residents are now grappling with how to comply with the new requirements amidst these constraints.
