The state of Maharashtra has witnessed a significant surge in vector-borne diseases this year, according to data released by the state health department. From January to July, cases of Chikungunya have more than doubled compared to the same period last year, with 875 cases reported as opposed to 363 previously recorded.

In contrast, the number of dengue cases remained similar to last year, with 3,736 cases reported this year compared to 3,164 cases in 2023. However, there has been an increase in malaria cases, totaling 5,300 so far this year, with three reported deaths. Last year, during the same period, there were 4,867 cases and two deaths due to malaria.

Specifically, in Pune, the municipal corporation’s health department recorded 16 positive cases of dengue out of 720 suspected cases. Additionally, there were 15 cases of Chikungunya reported in the city.

To combat the spread of these diseases, authorities have been proactive in identifying mosquito breeding sites. Pune Municipal Corporation has issued over 1,000 notices to housing societies, construction sites, and other locations found with mosquito breeding spots. An administrative fee amounting to Rs 3.87 lakh has been levied on those found negligent.

The rise in these cases highlights the importance of preventive measures such as mosquito control and public awareness campaigns.
