Khadakwasla Dam to Release 1,000 Cusecs of Water Today
Significant Rains Boost Water Storage in Khadakwasla Dam Cluster
Pune : Due to significant rains in July, water storage in the four dams under the Khadakwasla water cluster has increased to 45.50 percent, or 13.26 TMC.
On Sunday, the water resources department will release 1,000 cusecs of water from the Khadakwasla dam, which has now reached about 80 percent of its storage capacity. This will be the first water release of the year. Shweta Kurhade, executive engineer at the Khadakwasla Irrigation Department, announced that the water will be directed into the Mutha Right Canal, and a public advisory has been issued.
The intense July rains have increased the water storage in the Khadkwasla cluster to 45.50 percent, or 13.26 TMC. Last year on the same date, storage was at 41.93 percent. Temghar recorded the highest 24-hour rainfall of 50 mm in the cluster, according to the India Meteorological Department. This rainfall significantly boosted the water level at Khadakwasla. Data from the irrigation department shows that with 1.40 TMC water used, 70.90 percent of the water is stored in Khadakwasla Dam, prompting the release into the canal.
“With this release, water levels in the canal flowing through various areas in Pune will rise. The irrigation department has issued an advisory for citizens, advising them to avoid entering the canal,” Kurhade added.
Panshet has exceeded 50 percent of its water storage capacity, while Khadakwasla is approaching 80 percent. On July 20, Panshet recorded 52.59 percent water storage at 5.60 TMC. Meanwhile, Temghar and Warasgaon reported storage percentages of 33.72 and 39.11, respectively. In the Pune division, the total water level in dam projects was measured at 37.87 percent, compared to 33.61 percent at the same time last year.
The Bhama Askhed Dam and Pavana Dam, both critical sources of drinking water for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, recorded water levels of 28.62 percent and 35.33 percent, respectively. With continued light to moderate rainfall, especially in catchment areas, it is anticipated that water levels in all dams will keep rising in the coming days.
