Actor‑Politician Vijay’s Wife Sangeetha Seeks Divorce, Cites Adulterous Relationship and Mental Cruelty
Chengalpattu District Court has been approached with a divorce petition by Sangeetha Vijay, seeking to legally terminate her marriage with actor‑turned‑politician Vijay (born C Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar). The plea has been filed under Sections 27(1)(a), (b), (d) read with Sections 36 and 37 of the Special Marriage Act, 1954.
According to the documents filed, Sangeetha, 48, states that their marital journey began with a marriage registration in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998. This was followed by a traditional Hindu ceremonial wedding on August 25, 1999, held at Rajah Muthiah Mandram in Egmore, Chennai.
The petition notes that the early years of the union were “harmonious and peaceful,” with Sangeetha dedicating herself to managing the home and raising their children. However, the situation took a turn in April 2021 when she claims to have learned of Vijay’s intimate involvement with an actress. She describes this discovery as causing severe emotional distress and a breach of marital trust.
Although Vijay allegedly reassured her that the extramarital association would end, the petition asserts the relationship continued, inflicting what Sangeetha terms “mental cruelty”. It also mentions instances of public humiliation linked to social media posts, emotional abandonment, and constructive desertion. Attempts at reconciliation through legal counsel and personal talks between September 2021 and February 2022, and later from August 2024 to February 2025, are said to have fallen through.
The petition further argues that the marriage has irretrievably broken down and survives only as a legal formality. Sangeetha is asking the court for a formal decree to dissolve the marriage, along with permanent alimony that reflects Vijay’s income and public standing. She has also requested the right to stay in their Neelankarai residence until the case concludes or alternatively be provided equivalent accommodation. To protect privacy, she has sought that the proceedings be heard in camera.
Vijay and Sangeetha’s marriage predates his meteoric rise in Tamil cinema and his emergence as a political figure. Over the years, the couple maintained a largely private family life and are parents to a son and a daughter. Sangeetha, notably, has stayed away from the spotlight and seldom appeared at public events or political functions associated with Vijay.
Rumblings of marital discord have surfaced sporadically in the past, often triggered by Sangeetha’s absence at key events, including a high‑profile political gathering in 2025 that reignited speculation about possible trouble in their relationship.
In a separate development, Vijay’s film Jana Nayagan — originally slated for a January 9 release during the Pongal festival — has been pushed back indefinitely. The delay comes after the movie failed to secure certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Although initially told it could receive a U/A rating after edits, the film was later referred to a revising committee following a fresh complaint from an examining committee member.
The makers sought judicial intervention, but as legal proceedings stretched out, they withdrew their petition and agreed to comply with the CBFC’s directive — a decision the Madras High Court allowed on February 10.
In a candid off‑camera interaction with NDTV’s Rahul Kanwal, Vijay addressed the situation. According to the journalist, the actor‑politician spoke with composure and clarity, acknowledging that while he feels disappointed for his Jana Nayagan producer, he also anticipated such challenges due to his involvement in politics.
