Air India Crash: Tata Group Announces ₹1 Crore Compensation for Families of 33 Civilians Killed Outside the Aircraft

Ahmedabad, June 14, 2025: In a major development following the tragic Air India AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad, the Tata Group has announced ₹1 crore compensation for the families of the 33 individuals who died outside the aircraft at the crash site. The announcement brings some relief to those who were not onboard but lost their lives due to the explosion and debris when the plane crashed.
The crash, which claimed the lives of 241 out of 242 passengers on board, also resulted in the deaths of people present near BJ Medical College, where the aircraft went down. With the additional 33 fatalities, the total death toll has now risen to 274.
In a statement, the Tata Group confirmed that financial aid of ₹1 crore will also be extended to the families of these 33 victims. The group also committed to covering the full medical expenses of those injured in the accident and said it remains fully committed to supporting them in every possible way.
Among the deceased and injured are believed to be doctors, students, hospital staff, and local residents from the Meghani Nagar area. The crash also caused severe damage to the BJ Medical College hostel building, and the Tata Group has assured it will take responsibility for rebuilding the structure.
Total Death Toll Reaches 274
Out of 242 passengers on Air India’s Boeing Dreamliner flight AI-171, only one survived. The remaining 241 perished in the crash. In addition, 33 individuals who were outside the aircraft but in the vicinity of the crash site also lost their lives.
When asked whether the families of the victims would be offered employment as part of the relief package, Tata Group officials stated that no decision has been made on that front yet, as investigations and situation assessments are still ongoing.
In addition to the ₹1 crore aid announced by the Tata Group, the passengers’ families are expected to receive compensation of around ₹1.5 crore from various insurance companies. The primary insurers for Air India include Tata AIG General Insurance, ICICI Lombard General Insurance, New India Assurance, and other public sector general insurance firms.
