As of Thursday, the health department of Maharashtra reported 110 cases of the JN.1 variant of COVID-19, of which 91 are from Pune district.

Thane, with five cases, and Beed, with three cases, follow Pune. Two JN.1 cases apiece were reported from Nanded and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, while one each was from Nagpur and Solapur.

A senior official said that since December of last year, the majority of other variants appear to have been replaced by the JN.1 COVID-19 variant.

The official emphasized that there is no need for concern as hospitalizations have not increased and that they were swiftly studying patients to find clinical manifestations.

The state reported 171 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the total to 914 cases. Infection with COVID-19 has been linked to two reported deaths in the state. Among them are the deaths of a 101-year-old in Kolhapur and a 73-year-old in Solapur. Co-morbidities and underlying medical issues were present in both patients.

Since January 1, 2023, 139 Covid deaths have been reported in Maharashtra; of these, 71.22% involved people over 60, 84% included comorbidities, and 16% had no morbidity at all.
