Mumbai/ Pune, May 1, 2026:
The much-awaited ‘Missing Link’ project on the Mumbai Pune Expressway has been opened for public use, promising faster and safer travel between Mumbai and Pune. The project was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, the ambitious infrastructure project is expected to reduce travel time by nearly 30 minutes and ease congestion in the Lonavala ghat section.

The project, which began in 2019, has been constructed using advanced engineering techniques despite challenging terrain. It includes two major tunnels between Khopoli exit and Lonavala, each with four lanes in both directions. One tunnel is approximately 1.75 km long, while the other stretches around 8.92 km. With a width of nearly 23.75 metres, the tunnel is among the widest in the world.

A key highlight of the project is a cable-stayed bridge built over Tiger Valley at a height of about 132 feet. The bridge is designed to withstand strong winds of up to 70 kmph and heavy rainfall.

Another notable feature is that a section of the route passes nearly 182 metres below Lonavala Lake, showcasing advanced construction capabilities.

Once fully operational, the Missing Link is expected to reduce the overall distance on the expressway by around 6 kilometres. Officials have also clarified that there will be no increase in toll charges after the opening of this stretch. Initially, the route will be prioritised for cars and buses.

The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and boost economic activity by enabling smoother transportation between two major cities.
