ASOMI Pune holds Bihu celebrations in Undri

The community of Assamese diaspora in Pune, a socio-cultural organization, ASOMI celebrated Magh Bihu which marks the end of the harvesting season and brings a new beginning and hopes for people.

The festival is much related to Pongal, Sankranti and Lohri celebrations across the country. Over 350 people from across Pune city attended the celebrations. 

Rajib Borkatakki, general secretary, ASOMI said, “Keeping with the traditions, ASOMI’ Magh Bihu celebrations featured a Meji or Bonfire and a feast prepared by the community members, in addition to preparing the traditional Bihu delicacies like Pitha and Laddu (rice cakes and laddus made of sesame, coconut, and rice powder).

The event included various traditional games like ‘Koni-juj’ (egg fights), ‘Rosi-tona’ (tug of war), ‘Tekeli bhanga’ (breaking a pot blindfolded) and also featured Bihu dance and music by local artists. The event started with a tree-plantation drive near the venue.”  The event was held at Undri, Opp Majestique Euriska on 14 January.
